Clean water a fundamental right in Slovenia

The Slovene parliament has voted to amend the constitution to make the right to clean drinking water fundamental to all the country’s citizens.Furthermore, MPS voted to ensure that control of water supply remains in the public sector and the industry may not be privatised.
Politicians are concerned that the quality of Slovenia’s water is so high that it could be a target for foreign investors in the future and the purpose of the amendment was to ensure that this could not legally happen.
While 15 countries around the world have done something similar, Slovenia is the first EU member state to enshrine the right to clean drinking water in law. It seems particularly fitting in the same year that Slovenia’s capital city Ljubljana is the holder of the title European Green Capital.
