Summer Festivals in Slovenia
29.6.2023 |
Now that the school summer holidays have started, so too is the summer festival season getting into gear. Various music, art, food and children’s festivals take place across Slovenia. We’ve listed just a few to give you a taste of what’s happening and help get you in the festival mood.
Festival Lent, Maribor
At the end of June into early July, the streets, riverside and town squares of Maribor come alive with music and dance performances. Among them are local, national and international musicians and dance ensembles. There are folk dance performances, a jazz stage, internationally renowned pop and rock acts, and street theatre. The festival is somewhat smaller than in the past, but the programme is as diverse as ever.
Ana Desetnica, Ljubljana
This free festival of street theatre brings together jugglers, musicians, clowns and even tightrope walkers from Slovenia and beyond for five days of breathtaking entertainment in the Slovenian capital. Summer in the capital is always colourful and vibrant and Ana Desetnica makes it even more so.
Summer in Celje
From mid-June to the end of August Celje, Slovenia’s City of Counts, comes alive with a range of cultural events on the streets and squares of its city centre. This wide-ranging festival also incorporates the Celje Castle Festival, with musical performances in the castle courtyard with its magnificent views.
Summer Blossom Festival, Volčji potok Arboretum
From the beginning of July until the end of August, the Arboretum is ablaze with colour. The magnificent floral displays never fail to impress. As different parts of the park come into bloom, there is always something new to marvel at.
Jazzinty, Novo mesto
Taking place every summer for more than 20 years now, Jazzinty brings together jazz fans from all over Slovenia and even further afield for performances and workshops. In 2023, it’s taking place between 14 and 19 August.
Laško Beer & Flowers Festival
Over a weekend in July, the central Slovenian town of Laško hosts a vibrant festival celebrating the town’s most famous product – beer. The streets are decorated with flowers and local and international musical acts take to the stage. In 2023 the event takes place on 14, 15 and 16 July.
Zebra Animation Film Festival
On 29 July in Slovenj Gradec, five venues will host a children’s film festival focusing on animation. The films will be screened every thirty minutes. Meanwhile, in the town’s streets there will be food stalls and additional activities for the whole family.
Overjam Festival, Tolmin
The Overjam reggae festival is the perfect event for summer vibes. In 2023, it’s taking place from 16 to 20 August. While the festival focuses on reggae music, there is a varied programme of live performances, films and even a children’s stage. A campsite is available and with the fantastic location by the river, it’s easy to see why people come year after year.
