Slovenia in the Movies

Although several Slovenian cities host annual film festivals, the country is not widely known for making movies, but it is gradually becoming known as a location for making movies. Recently the government announced new measures to encourage production companies to film in Slovenia and this comes hot on the tail of a succession of important Bollywood movies which have been filmed partly on location here.
There are a few films that you may not have known were filmed in Slovenia. For example, The 1990 comedy-drama Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern are Dead starring Tim Roth and Gary Oldman was partly filmed in Brežice in southern Slovenia, near the border with Croatia.
The 2008 fantasy film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian features the Soča Valley in a battle scene. The dramatic scene was filmed at a location close to Bovec, which was chosen because it looked a lot like New Zealand where most of the movie was shot.
In 1986 Jackie Chan came to Slovenia to film Armour of God, an action comedy. The famous Predjama Castle near Postojna featured as a location in this movie.
In 2016 Chiranjeevi filmed his comeback movie at locations in Croatia and Slovenia. A couple of years earlier a hugely popular South Korean soap opera was filmed at locations on the Slovenian coast, with the result being a huge surge of visitors from South Korea who wanted to see where their favourite show had been filmed.
In 2017, popular actor and some-time director Parthiepan is in Slovenia filming a new movie Dhruva Natchathiram. And that’s not all: in the last eighteen months or so no fewer than 6 Indian promotional films and two other feature films have been filmed in Slovenia.
On the other hand, two Slovenian-made movies were featured in the 84th International Children’s Film Festival which was held in Hyderabad and Indian filmmakers are very interested in learning from Slovenia which has a well-repsected tradition in children’s film making.
With the news incentives for film production companies, Slovenia looks set to be become even better known through the big screen.
