Ljubljana – JB Restaurant

17.2.2012

A class act

When I received the invitation to attend a cooking class at the renowned restaurant, JB, to say I was a little excited would be an understatement. I have heard a lot about Janez Bratovž and I was intrigued about the prospect of cooking with Slovenia’s master chef.

I arrived at JB at ten’ clock, and was offered an aperitif and a chance to meet and greet the rest of the group participating in the class.  We soon settled down at a large table to discuses the day’s events. The class was to be spoken entirely in English. It was designed to give Slovenians a chance to practice English in a social environment and to give us expats a chance to participate in a Slovenian cooking class.

We started the class by splitting up in to two teams and playing some fun culinary word games. It was a great way for the group to get to know each other and relax.

We then were handed a four course menu and recipes of what we were to cook that day.  Alenka, the groups’ translator, explained that we were to “pick a dish to cook”.  Spoilt for choice, I picked the salt baked sea bass with layered vegetable and clam sauce. Although we were all very much involved in all the dishes, we were very much responsible for our own.  Everyone took pleasure in learning and working with Janez, whilst also enjoying the occasional glass of bubbly!. Janez is the perfect host in his kitchen and was very “hands on” with all the students.

Once we had finished most of the work, it was time to set the table and enjoy the fruits of our labour. Every group member was responsible for finishing their dish and serving it. Each of the dishes was paired with some fantastic wines picked out by Janez himself.

The food was simply amazing and the day was thoroughly enjoyable. Janez was so hospitable as well as a plethora of information and resources. It will defiantly go down as the best meal I have had in Slovenia and I have been here five years! Brilliant day, great company, superb wines and fantastic food, a class act!

Ljubljana villas in for example the Rozna Dolina area are also priced at a level that is too high for most Slovenia real estate investors.
